honeybees

Honeybees are incredible. Did you know for example, that the forager bees in a hive can communicate the exact locations and directions of flowers they’ve found... by dancing? Scientists call it the ‘waggle dance’ - a precise mathematical set of group movements that tell the hive where to find food, based on angles and the direction of the sun!

This is a great picture of church! A bee outside of the hive can’t really survive as a lone honeybee: there’s no way to join the dance. Bees need each other just like we do. The writer to the Hebrews puts it like this:

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”- Hebrews 10:24-25

The bees adjust their dance-moves according to the angle of the sun. They have an ability to track its path across the sky and change the angles of the waggle dance!

Maybe today we should consider how our own journey is responding to what God is doing with the church? Could you join the dance? Maybe the first step is to find the warmth of the sunlight, and then find your rhythm and your beehive. Don’t give up meeting together! Church is awesome.
